Dexamethasone was first synthesized in 1957 and is listed on the World Health Organization's Model List of Essential Medicines. It is one of the essential medicines in the basic public health system. Mainly used as first aid medicine for critical illness and treatment of various types of inflammation.

On June 16, 2020, the WHO stated that preliminary clinical trial results in the UK showed that dexamethasone can save the lives of severely ill patients with COVID-19. For patients on ventilators, it can reduce the mortality rate by about one-third; Patients receiving only oxygen reduced their mortality by about a fifth.
