Usage Acetazolamide is a diuretic and carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. After taking it, it inhibits carbonic anhydrase in renal tubular epithelial cells, reducing the formation of H2CO3 and subsequently decreasing the production of H+. Therefore, the exchange of H+ and Na+ is greatly slowed down. As a result, the excretion of HCO3-, Na+, and K+ increases, then the urine output increases.
